• The results of any IRS tax audits (if any additional tax was due)
• The amount of any IRS tax penalties and tax interest assessed for the tax year on the total tax due (often as the result of an IRS tax audit)
• The current tax balance due, with interest calculated to the date when the free transcripts of IRS tax return were printed.

Requesting past tax returns

In addition, tax payers may also get copies of any tax returns filed with IRS in the past. Copies of tax returns are not free. You can request any past tax returns by filling out and filing Form 4506, along with payment of the required fee.  

You can also use Form 4506 to obtain copies of Form W-2 (wages) or verification that no tax return was filed. A safer route for confirming that no tax return was filed is to request a free transcript of IRS tax return from the IRS.
