Question: If I live in PA, do I have to pay any Sales Tax on a used car that I am buying in NJ?

If I live in PA, do I have to pay any Sales Tax on a used car that I am buying in NJ?

I read somewhere that since I am not a resident of NJ and I am buying out-of-state that I am exempt from paying NJ auto Sales Tax. But the dealer is saying that I have to pay PA Sales Tax on the car since that is where I live. So, do I have to pay taxes on it since I’m purchasing the car out of my home state. I do not have any vacation homes or any type of former residence in NJ.

Answer: Yes, you have to pay Sales Tax on this because it is considered a large purchase. You have the option to pay the lower Sales Tax rate though. If the the NJ rate is higher than PA the dealer can elect to not charge you Sales Tax but you must submit the 6% to PA.
