Question: I need to get my car title and registration – but this isn’t going to be easy, is it?

Here’s my situation:

My father gave me the car as a gift last year, and I lost the title. I know that I have to go to the local tax accessors office to get the title changed to my name and whatnot, but I have to get his original title.

I need to get Texas registration and title.

He has lived in several different states, so I don’t know where he originally bought the car (if that matters)..and he won’t help me in this matter.

Question #1: Are titles state specific?

Question #2: Do you have to update the title on your car in every state you live in?

Question #3 Can I find out where the car was titled if I have the VIN #? (vehicle ID number?)

Any help is much appreciated.
Some extra details:

* We have the same name

* I have a copy of his drivers license

Answer: If he won’t help you in the matter, it won’t be easy. Sounds like he is angry because you were not taking care of business, in Texas you have 10 days to get things changed over, or you pay a penalty, you can’t put it off a year.

Without his help you may need to go a title service for help, which won’t be cheap or easy. Good luck.
