October Tax Filing

October Tax Filing

Question: When fired, can you still file for tax returns?

If I had a job from May to October, would I be able to file for tax returns, and how would I go about doing that?
I made $7.15 an hour and worked 4 1/2 hours every week day and worked 8 hours on sundays.

My employer never sent my last check until my mom went in to talk to him about 2 months later. I’m unsure if he’ll send me a form to do it then.

Answer: Being out of work (fired or not) makes no difference.

The IRS looks at total income you received during the year. If you had enough money withheld during those 6 months, you may well get a refund since the withholding is done on the assumption you are working all year.

Wait for ALL of your W-2s before you file. If you have moved, make sure the old employer has your current address.

As a dependent, you would not owe tax unless and until the total is more than $5450 (about what you appear to have made). When you filled out the W-4, you may have put down exempt–if you did, nothing would have been withheld for Income Taxes so there would be nothing to refund.
