Federal Taxes 2009 Changes

Question: My fiancee got a letter from the IRS.?
It says there was an error on his 2009 federal income Tax Return. It says they changed the amount claimed as making work pay and goverment retiree credit on line 63, form 1040. I don’t understand what it means.
So does that mean that the IRS will send him a check for the difference because it says amount of refund $4,459
so how will this work?Answer: It means just what it says. He claimed an incorrect amount and the IRS adjusted it. Most adjustments are due to the taxpayer failing to claim the MWP credit. If it isn’t claimed and it is apparent that it should have been, the IRS will add the credit in and adjust the taxpayer’s refund upwards.
On some occasions, people receiving Social Security, VA Pension, SSI, or Railroad Retirement benefits who received the one-time $250 payment last year AND had earned income in 2009 claimed more than $150 for the MWP credit. The maximum combined credit is $400. Carelessness in filling out Schedule M manually can lead to that, as can incorrectly entering information into Tax Software, i.e. leaving out the $250 payment from the SSI, VA or RRB. In those cases the adjustment would be downwards.
