Question: How does universal health care work in Canada?

If you pay for private health care in Canada, do you still have to pay taxes to support the government’s health care program? I’d like to know the gist of universal health care in Canada.

On a semi-related note, does anyone know how much money is spent per year per person for health care in the United States? This is including all government and employer financed insurance programs, etc.
P.S. please list sources cited if possible

Answer: Canada has banned private health care, something that would be unconstitutional in the United States, so nobody should be worrying about that.

Basically, the government side is the insurance, but with the added law that you cannot pay yourself. You must accept what insurance (government) provides.

There are some wait times for expensive or rare procedures, and there are many horror stories about these. However, you might notice that most of the so-called horror stories end with the problem being cured, so the horror is apparently that the cure didn’t come immediately.

US citizens pay close to $8000 per year per capita for health care, Canada pays about $5000 or so.
