Question: Can I claim my unemployed domestic partner on my taxes?

My domestic partner lost her job and was involved in an accident two years ago. I have been her sole source of support while she attends school. Two years ago, she had reported income from a 401K, but this year she has no income at all. We own a house together, and I paid the entire mortgage, which should mean that I get to deduct the entire tax credit this year since she did not pay. Also, I paid for her school expenses, like books and supplies. I do not want to change her eligibility for educational assistance, but I also don’t want to lose the deductions.

Answer: Bash gives you the requitements to claim her. If you meet all those, you can.

It likely will affect her FAFSA amount. But you, and she, can’t have it both ways.
