Question: how do i preparte state tax: lived in nyc and nj at different points in 2008?

I worked in NYC all of 2008. I lived in nyc from jan 08 to may08, then in new jersey from may08 until end of year. How do i do my state taxes…Do i file a ny state form for only the income i earned while i lived in nyc, and then file a nj state form for the income i earned while I lived in nj?

Answer: You will file income tax in both states. Both forms generally start out with your total earned income (from your Federal return), then deduct out any income and tax you made/paid to the other state.
