Question: question about ny/nj Tax Filing?
What forms do I need to file if I worked in NY/lived in NJ for 10 months of 1006, then moved to and worked in DC for the remaining 2 months of 2006? I had my taxes done by H&R Block and it seems that they lumped the work I did in DC with my NY/NJ taxes and now, I owe the state of NJ over $1,000.00 in taxes. It was my understanding that NY and NJ deal with what each is owed through themselves–I don’t have to pay NJ separately from NY. Please advise. Thank you.
Answer: For NY, you would file a non-resident return. Any taxes paid to NY can be claimed as a credit on your NJ return.
You would file a part year resident return for NJ for the 10 months you lived in NJ. Make sure that only your income from NY is listed on your NJ return because NJ only has a right to Tax Income that you earned while you lived in NJ, regardless of which state the income was earned in.
For DC you would file a Part Year Resident return for the 2 months you lived and worked in DC.
